When my nephew was about 11 months old, my Mum was babysitting him and his brother whilst their parents attempted to enjoy a rare evening out. I decided to pop in for a cup of a tea. Shortly afterwards, my Mum went to put the children to bed. It was then that I heard a horrifying scream from upstairs. My nephew had begun having a seizure. This was a very frightening experience, especially when it is a child within the family. I had dealt with medical emergencies on numerous occasions through work, however when it comes to dealing with a member of your own family, emotions are even more heightened.
Due to the seizure, saliva caused his airway to become blocked, and it was only because of my previous training that I was able to act quickly and a administer a single chest compression which cleared the airway. The event was due to a temperature causing a febrile seizure. The ambulance service was quick to respond, and thankfully he made a full recovery.
Becoming a father myself I know the importance of being able to act quickly and calmly in an emergency if the worst were to ever happen. When our son was born, I ensured that my partner completed a first aid course. It was from here that I wanted to be able to bring a local class for new parents and care givers. We hope that you never need to use the training, but our aim is for you to be prepared if you do.
